Mashable Profiles Social Media Star 'Pornhub Aria'

CYBERSPACE — The social media manager behind Pornhub’s famously vibrant Twitter and Instagram handles has earned a profile on Mashable.com.

Writer Marcus Gilmer examines the driving force behind Pornhub’s 6.3 million Instagram followers and 1.3 million Twitter follows: Aria Nathaniel, aka “Pornhub Aria.”

“By riffing on memes, trends and current events — and interacting with readers — Pornhub stays relevant and continues to build an engaged community,” observed Mashable.

Nathaniel walks “a fine line” as she surfs for the latest trending topics and breaking news stories, tasked with “spreading awareness of the brand, engaging with followers and keeping her posts within each platforms’ terms of service,” all of which appears “effortless.”

She also enjoys a tad more leeway than someone running the Twitter handle, for example, of “a telecom or an airline.”

“I try to latch on to mainstream trends and breaking news stories to boost engagement. If people are talking about something nonstop, I want to insert myself into that discussion,” Nathaniel said. “I’m constantly scouring the news and keeping myself 'in the know' on things — sports, politics, entertainment, video games.”

Nathaniel has largely managed to sidestep harassment by trolls and stalkers by carefully curating what she posts about. She also points out all of the social media accounts owned by Pornhub parent company Mindgeek — including RedTube and YouPorn — are run by women.

And she is pleased when Pornhub fans realize there’s an actual person behind the Twitter polls and Instagram memes. “It always amazes me when people realize I’m not a bot and actually a real human," she said. "I always get a good laugh from that. Most people are super-nice and gracious, and I’m always so appreciative. At the end of the day, regardless of someone’s profession, people should be mindful of the things they say to them.”

Nathaniel described working at Pornhub as “like being in a sex ed class — and I mean that in the best way possible. I’m more knowledgeable about sex and sexual health. I’m more aware of the sexual community and the challenges they face. I’m more in tune with sex workers and have been fortunate to form lifelong friendships with many of them.”

Despite the pressures inherent in her job — social media meltdowns and Twitter mobs are depressingly common — Nathaniel has enjoyed lending her authenticity to Pornhub’s public persona.

“I haven’t changed to conform to people’s preferences or anything,” she said. “I take pride in that.”
