Reddit, Twitter Ban 'Deepfakes' Porn

LOS ANGELES — The backlash against “deepfakes” continues to grow.

Following bans by PornHub, Discord and Gfycat, several other platforms including Twitter and Reddit have decided to ban the posting of AI-generated videos that realistically edit new faces onto adult performers.

Deepfakes take existing video footage and employ a machine-learning algorithm through technology like FakeApp. The algorithm is able to take the face and seamlessly paste it onto another body.

The resulting videos are nearly indecipherable from reality and can border on copyright infringement or defamation.

On Reddit, which had a robust deepfakes subreddit community of about 100,000 subscribers, a policy update has curtailed the practice.

Reddit now “prohibits the dissemination of images or video depicting any person in a state of nudity or engaged in any act of sexual conduct apparently created or posted without their permission, including depictions that have been faked.”

Reddit further elaborated on its new policy to the press, telling Motherboard that “communities focused on this content and users who post such content will be banned from the site.”

Twitter had an equally bruising response, as well, about users who distribute deepfakes content.

“We will suspend any account we identify as the original poster of intimate media that has been produced or distributed without the subject’s consent,” a Twitter publicist said. “We will also suspend any account dedicated to posting this type of content.”

PornHub yesterday said that it would take down the fake videos once they are flagged by users.
