Financial Post Takes Peek at Montreal-based Adult Companies

MONTREAL — Canada’s top financial news outlet last week took a peek at Montreal’s burgeoning online adult businesses, interviewing numerous local players that have turned the city into a world capital for online porn.

For the global online adult industry, Montreal, with its reputation for having a plentiful supply of strip clubs, sex shops, massage parlors and escort services, has become sort of a tech center for the biz, the Financial Post wrote.

The Financial Post article can be read here.

The Financial Post interviews Montreal adult entrepreneurs, including Your Paysite Partner’s Kenny B, QWEBEC Expo’s Michael Plant and 2Much’s Mark Prince, among others, including an exec from the adult entertainment conglomerate MindGeek.

Kenny B, whose content is distributed primarily in North America, told the Financial Post that content needs to be properly managed and that’s where money is to be made.

“2016 will be our best year in 17 years,” Kenny B said. “Tubes came in and killed a whole sector of the industry because we were selling something that is free, but it weeded out all of the people who had lousy-quality content and paved the way for people with great quality content to make a good living.”

MindGeek exec Catherine Dunn said Montreal’s numerous universities and relatively low cost of living give it a large pool of talent to draw from. Eight hundred of its more than 1,000 employees work at the Montreal location and its operators are two Montrealers — Feras Antoon and David Marmorstein Tassillo.

“We’ve got some of the best minds in software engineering and programming, and that is in part due to Montreal’s reputation as ‘Silicon Valley North,'” Dunn said.

Plant noted that “Montreal is the hub of the adult industry not just in Canada but is a major player in North America as well.”

While the article notes that most video is produced from the Los Angeles area, there still is demand for Canadian-spiced content.

“Though pornography in Montreal may be going to the geeks, one place where there is still a market is in Quebec-made content for a local audience,” the Financial Post wrote. “According to data compiled by PornHub on its visitors from around the world, the No. 1 search term in the province is ‘Quebec.’”

Pegas Productions, the article said, even claims one of its most popular series features public sex at landmarks such as the Old Port of Montreal and Terrasse Dufferin by the Château Frontenac in Quebec City.
